Why is gladiator begins rated m

Gladiator Begins scratches that same obsessive itch. Equipping too many heavy pieces slows performance and makes the player an easy target. Mixing and matching to find the right balance of offense and defense without a weight penalty is a challenge. Add in the task of finding which equipment works best for the combat style the player favors, and it turns each match from a simple melee into a tactical opportunity to get better gear and improve stats.

With most matches only lasting a few minutes at most and new gear dropping at a fast and furious rate, Gladiator Begins has no problem maintaining a high level of return on time invested. The repetition of so much combat might not satisfy players looking for a well-rounded adventure, but to me, this title distills aspects of play that I enjoy into focused, dense sessions. So what about the story? With the combat as enjoyably solid as it is and with so many attributes to adjust, alter and experiment with, I really felt no need for a grand tale—gameplay itself was more than enough to keep my interest.

However, for players who love to take a zeroed-out character and build them up into an overwhelmingly powerful force via grinding, creative equipping and numeric management, this combination of swords, sandals, and statistics is an experience not to be missed. Disclosures: This game was obtained via retail store and reviewed on the PSP. Approximately 10 hours of play were devoted to the single-player mode, and the game was completed. No time was spent in multiplayer modes.

Leveling up and becoming an armored tank that can kill people in a few hits is not worth it for the crowd. They want a long, skilled fight that is worthy of their attention.

This keeps players from creating gladiators with maxed out strength since defense is just as important when you have to last a decent amount of time alive. Once the match has ended and you have received your rating you are given the chance to take a few items off of the battlefield with you. You are only allowed a set amount of slots to take equipment so be sure you grab what you need or can sell at a high price. You must pay off the price paid for you as a slave so you can become a free man or woman.

Customization From the very beginning the customization is present. You build your character as either male or female, choose skin tone, face type, etc. After finalizing your initial build you will be on a nonstop quest to deck out your fighter in the latest armor and swinging around the best weaponry.

Special equipment with high stats are represented by their titles being colored something besides the basic white such as blue or yellow. Most people will stop caring what their gladiator looks like after a while and just end up with a character who has a mixed bag of high level goodies covering their body. The necessity for better and stronger items creates an addiction to scavenge for the best so that you can continue to be the best. As many RPG fans are aware finding and utilizing new items to their fullest until the newest shiny toy comes around is quite common and can grab your attention for long periods of time.

Actually, one could even enjoy this game while omitting the fact that there is even a story present. The story comes in the form of old-fashioned text dialogue without audio between matches including various characters that you meet.

Think of the game as a beefed up simulator instead of an action adventure. Repetitive You may recall me saying that the great thing about the game is the tactical nature you feel at first. This is primarily due to the fact that after a while the game devolves into button mashing. Why bother trying to disarm enemies when you can just hit them in the head? The most effective technique is to bash their helmet until it flies off then repeatedly hit their head for critical damage.

That tactic will get you very far if not to the end. Summary: Customize your own Gladiator and win your freedom! Choose from several different builds, faces, hair styles and skin tones. Although it's too bad that Gladiator Begins landed with nary a whisper, it's clear to see that the title would never have found a large audience to begin with-it's aimed at a certain hardcore niche, and for those outside of that niche, there will be little here of interest.

All this publication's reviews Read full review. While the deep equipment options and versatile combat are appreciated, the random difficulty highs and lows, practically and perhaps, blessedly, I suppose non-existent story, and eventually tedious lack of any real gameplay variety make it hard to recommend. Gladiator Begins' smaller successes still can't compensate for its significant problems, and the game as a whole never quite gels in an effective way.

Brutality, splashes of blood and gigantic swords might look and feel great, but I feel like Caesar wouldn't have mercy for this fighter's incompetence and missed marks. Pocket Gamer UK. Fans of historical pseudo-realism will find the format intriguing but a disappointing fighting system nestling at its core scuppers much of the potential of Gladiator Begins. A brawler with a weak combat system. Had the combat been tighter, then perhaps I could have given this a glowing review, but when the heart of a game is flawed, all of the other components are going to suffer.

The game feels like one big grind and even the eventual showdowns with tigers and elephants offered few thrills during our feeble quest. User Reviews. Write a Review. The Star of Gladiator begins Ok. The Star of Gladiator begins is its Simple yet Addictive gameplay. I Did :-D … Expand. This game is without a doubt, worth your time. The story isn't too great, but some of the characters are interesting.
