Subject Assessment are held according to the ETS schedule and are generally scheduled during the academic year. Therefore, you must plan ahead to make sure your test scores arrive in plenty of time to support your certification process. We recommend that you prepare for the test test preparation material on ETS website and in HuskyCT cohort site for current students. Take the test s early enough so that, if you do not pass, you will have a chance to take the exam again before you complete the program.
The state of Connecticut also requires teacher education program students to complete the performance-based, subject-specific assessment edTPA. If you have any questions about assessment requirements, please contact the Certification Officer Dr. Ann Traynor. Some content on this website may require the use of a plug-in, such as Adobe Acrobat Viewer.
UConn A-Z. Computer-Based Tests: Although there are minimum passing standards, students do not need to achieve the passing score in order to enter the teaching program. Score Report Receipt : Score reports are available via your online account. Retest : You do not need to retake the test since passing scores are not needed to enter the program.
I too eventually moved back to my home state to teach. I have been successfully teaching in NJ for 20 years, but I will be moving to PA at the end of this school year. I took twice now, both times at a testing center in NJ. The first time I was 3 points away from passing, the second I was 13 points away from passing. It is so frustrating. You may also want to consider a subscription to Magoosh Praxis, as we have if I do say so pretty good Core Math support.
I have to take praxis II for business; I do not know what to expect. Can any help? Not everyone gets to a third language… or even a second!
That PDF is available free-of-charge and may be enough to allow you to prepare for the exam with confidence. However, if you still need more prep, and want an exact look at what the test is like, there is another resource. Also bear in mind that if you are testing in your non-native language you can request extra time. Today I took the praxis business exam again which was questions.
At the end of the test the computer give a score of but when I look at how many questions I got correct it was What is going on. Let us know how things turn out! Robert there is a free study plan available for this test on the ETS website that tells you exactly what you will need to know. I just took the exam. Got a I need a I feel like the materials did not prepare me. Is it possible that 7 points can be added to my score? It definitely does sound frustrating! Review the ETS materials a second time, checking every question and answer explanation carefully.
Also know your content in general— really research all the most important facts in the six Social Studies academic concepts listed in the Praxis Study Companion. I just boomed the Praxis Core Mathematics with an unofficial score of I had previously taken 2 or 3 practice tests and passed each of those.
I am not sure what happened??!! Some of the questions seemed different than the ones I practiced with. I used Praxis Core for Dummies and the practice test from the ets. Are there other materials for this test to study with? Should I hire a tutor? Math is my weakest subject. I am heart broken that I can not start teaching. First, I am so sorry this has happened.
It is frustrating to have standardized tests and bureaucracy get in the way of what you want. The fact that you are upset means you are the kind of person with empathy and passion to teach. The world needs you! Now, I recommend getting that score report and scrutinizing it. Where are the weak areas? What can you tackle to do better next time?
This is good information, because it can help you decide if you want a tutor this can definitely work if you have access to this kind of support or if you think you can tackle the issues on your own.
You can do this! Get that report first, and build your approach around the information it gives you. The ETS practice tests are not beneficial , please stop recommending them Dave. I suggest mgmtutoring. Also just ordered another resource- will let you know how it is— Exam Sam? Also just ordered. But I also know that they can be a bit hit-or-miss, especially because the test day experience is sometimes a good deal different than the exam.
In future writings on this blog, any recommendations of the ETS tests will include some caveats. Thank thanks for the link to MGM tutoring. There are so few tutoring services that offer Praxis tutoring at all, and it looks like the tutors and prep material creators there are very knowledgeable. The first time I made , second time and third time My state requires I am so frustrated with spending money on test material and yet to pass!!
Does anyone have any testing strategies or recommendations for study material for this test??? Today I took the Praxis Core Math and failed for the second time, with the exact same score of I need a However, the Praxis Core Math portion is defeating me. Not to mention, the costs per test are alarming. On another note, when I took the Praxis Core English, the score given after the exam was But, when I received the official score, it was I wonder why there was a deduction of 4 points?
I heard that Praxis scores never decrease, but rather increase if anything. My study efforts have not helped me, but I will continue to test until I pass it. The Praxis Core test should be relevant to the grade level that the prospective educator will teach. I have to pass this Praxis Core Math to continue on in graduate school and to keep my certification.
I am sorry! This is frustrating, especially when you have been trying to clear a hurdle and have successfully gotten over so many others. Definitely use your score report to determine how you need to prepare for your next and final!
A change of 4 points is a little larger than I see, but the scores definitely can get higher or lower. And I have great confidence that you can conquer it your next time!
I am sure many other teachers and future teachers can understand this frustration of needing to pass exams and get certifications that ultimately are not relevant to what you aim to do. Keep at it, analyze your math test results, and fill in enough knowledge gaps to master that test! I took my praxis witing test and got while the passing score is The score repoet says that I got 22 correct questions out of 34, knowing that time ended before ending 4 questions. And in the essay section I got 12 out of Any advice for my second trial?!
Here are a few things you can think about as you prepare for a retake: — Think back on your exam. Where there are particular types of questions that were most difficult for you?
If so, try to do lots of practice on those kinds of questions. Analyze each answer choice, trying to understand why the correct answer is correct and why the wrong answers are wrong. Do you feel that your speed was an obstacle? If so, I recommend working on your pace. You can do this by practicing lots and lots of Praxis-type questions. You can use official ETS practice, Magoosh questions, and other sources. Some additional sources of practice problems are discussed here.
You can also find lots of Praxis Writing practice in this blog. With practice, your speed will improve over time. There are 50 questions on the test.
So I am retaking math…. Hi, I have taken the Math 3 times. They first time I got a , then a , and lastly a I want to pass on some of the advice my mentor for my program gave me.
Try to memorize it and write down everything you can remember from the test that way you can study those concepts should you need to retest. This test is insanely difficult. I already work in a school district and I know the skills tested on this exam are not needed to be an effective teacher. It is so discouraging. Hi Megan, Thank you for your post. I just failed the second time yesterday and am very discouraged 1st attempt, yesterday — need in CO.
I echo your sentiments. I have very bad test anxiety and it gets worse each time I take the test. I am getting more and more frustrated. I have so much difficulty with this type of test! I purchased all the ETS study materials and have passed every one of the practice tests. Donna, I am also having trouble with the Math Core test. I have taken it 3 times already and am failing. It is discouraging and it pains me to keep paying out ridiculous funds for these tests that have now bearing on the material i will teach a K-3 grades.
I received high honors with my coursework. I am also struggling with the Praxis II exam and failed it four times. I have bought study books and hired tutors. I completely understand that frustration issue with the timed testing and not being able to see the questions that I am getting wrong. Besides spending yet more money on these tests and materials, what do you suggest?
Anxiety is my biggest hurdle as well. You not only have to know how to do the problems, but you have to know how to do the shortcuts as well. Because you can only spend about 2 minutes on each question. Really good points, PN. Managing your test anxiety and your pacing is about as important as knowing the content! I am in the process of applying to graduate school for a Masters in Education and need to pass Praxis 1 to be accepted. I was able to pass the reading on the first try, but did not have the same luck with the math and writing.
The examples are easy to understand and the test questions are spot on. I have no doubt that this study guide helped me pass…third times a charm ;. Unfortunately, I am still working on the writing section; took it for the fourth time yesterday — fingers crossed that this time will be the last!! Which were completely different then the test.
I felt super prepared. If anyone has advice please share, I would like some input to be able to pass and finally teach. And much of the content listed in the study companion can be found in your teacher training textbooks or in education websites.
Just as importantly, PLT study companions include sample short answers. We also have several Praxis PLT tutorials and practice questions right here on the blog, which you may find helpful:. She has taken it three times. The first time she was 1 point away, the second far away and this time she was so confident she had done well but missed it by 5. She has put so much money into these tests and her heart is broken.
She has said she is a failure…this breaks my heart and I find these tests to be ridiculous. For all the money they charge for each time there should be some study guides and free help to pass. This is a difficult position to be in, and first and foremost I recommend giving your daughter space to feel whatever emotions she feels and some time to step away and collect herself.
When she is ready to talk about it, I would emphasize that this test does not test her readiness for her career path or her intelligence as a future educator. This is nothing more than a standardized hurdle that she has to learn to overcome not because it is indicative of her ability to do her job well, but because it is one of many bureaucratic steps. I have passed the Praxis math core, but now need to pass Praxis , which includes Elementary Math, Anyone know how these two exams compare in content?
These exams have a lot of overlap in content, but they also have some distinct differences. It would be hard to go into all of the similarities and differences right here. These study companions are both official documents from the makers of the Praxis, and they give good profiles of both exams for easy comparison. If I take the Praxis Multiple subjects and pass all but one of the sections do I have to retake the entire Multiple subjects test or just the one subject that I failed?
If you saw a in the test center, that means your scaled official score will likely also be A on Praxis Mathematics: Content Knowledge is low by the standards of most states. However, to know for sure whether you passed, check on the Praxis requirements of your own state. And remember that your final score may be adjusted by a few points! I took the Praxis twice because I was short by two points of the required score. I did pass the second time going two points above the required score. I took the exam after my 21 day period.
Congrats, Collette! Thanks for sharing your experience with us—many students find this page discouraged after failing to pass, and your experience shows that hard work and persistence pays off!
My sister has taken the Praxis 1 FIVE times now, and each time she takes it her score gets worse She missed it by 3 points the first time, the most recent she missed it by She only wants to get a Birth-Kindergarten license in North Carolina. She needs to pass the Praxis 1 to enter into a teachers ed program.
Are there any alternative routes for her to be able to obtain a BK license? How frustrating! Unfortunately, the Praxis 1 is required for all state licenses in North Carolina see the official website for NC Praxis requirements. Because of this, any alternative certification program for the state of North Carolina would ultimately lead to your sister needing to take the Praxis I, at the end of the program if not at the beginning. Often, test-takers find their scores slipping due to anxiety, and if they can identify that anxiety an overcome it, they can go back in, improve their scores and get to where they need to be.
Since pretty much any state will require some kind of standardized testing for teacher licensure, mastering a test— Praxis or perhaps a different test in a different state— is definitely something your sister will want to do. Can you go to the State Board of Education to complain about these test? My son has attempted to take the Music Praxis 4 times and has failed each one. He is in jeopardy of loosing a job he has already accepted pending licensure. He is signed up for it again but has terrible test anxiety.
There needs to be another way to get the licensure that is required besides this money scam!! We get a lot of comments from people in similar situations and with similar complaints about the Praxis test. I encourage your son to reach out to the state department of education as well as the school district where he accepted the position to see if they have any resources or advice. I was two points away and the third time I took it, during the CR essays, and I did not answer my questions clearly.
I became sweaty and flustered and could not think clearly. I ended up scoring much much lower than my pst 2 scores. Happily, though, many students have gotten to this emotional point with the Praxis and still managed to get a second wind and beat the test. I have a few pieces of advice that can help you become one of those students. First and foremost, find ways to calm yourself. Picture that worst case— whatever it is— and imagine being OK with it, if it happens.
This will make the stakes of the exam seem a lot less scary. Paradoxically, accepting the possibility of failure can give you the calm and focus you need to succeed. A second component of calming yourself is to get in the best, most focused mindset possible while you practice for the test. And even if you have used those materials before, go through those official practice questions again. The essay portion of this test deserves special attention.
Of course, you should be looking at the scoring guides and the model answers in the official Praxis SLLA study companion. However, you may also want to find a tutor who can give you feedback on your practice essays— or get help from a peer who also took the test and did well on the essays. If you do decide to go with a tutor, Wyzant and other similar tutoring services can help you get in contact with an affordable tutor.
With just a few hours of targeted tutoring, you may find yourself far more knowledgeable and confident about what the Praxis scorers want for your SLLA essays. Hi, My girlfriend has taken the Praxis II about 7 times now. This last time she really studied for butt off for the exam and pretty much read some study guide book she got from front to back, focusing on her weak spots and sticking to a specific subject every week.
Southern JC , Jul 5, Joined: Jun 3, Messages: Likes Received: 0. So if you have a higher GPA, you don't have to score so high on the Praxis.
You might want to look into that. Anyhow, no offense to you or your gf but the Praxis I exams are really basic stuff and that applies to the math part too.
It's math that you should've learned before high school. Joined: Dec 21, Messages: Likes Received: 1. HMM , Jul 7, CherryOak likes this. Joined: Nov 18, Messages: Likes Received: 0. Jul 9, Did she student teach? My undergrad college didn't take ed. I'm surprised she was able to complete her degree requirements without having passed all three Praxis exams.
I briefly looked over middle school math concepts up to Algebra I just to make sure I remembered formulas and how to solve problems. It might help your girlfriend to do that or study a Praxis I Math review book.
Good luck to her!!!! Joined: Aug 12, Messages: 4 Likes Received: 0. Aug 12, What State is your girlfriend in or What State is she trying to get certified in?
I am going back to take the Reading and Math portions in September. I need two points for the reading portion and 5 points for the math, I'm an aspiring math teacher. All I'm doing is: 1. Staying calm. Tell your girlfriend not to keep thinking about this test. Review the score report very closely, because it reveals specific areas that she can review.
Review those specific areas. IF it is inference infering what the author said in a passage review that area. Stay calm, she will pass this time.
Hope this helps. God bless. Joined: Nov 6, Messages: 14 Likes Received: 0. Some states are different and require different things, such as the Praxis comes after being in a program. I guess the trade off is you cannot student teach unless you pass the Praxis.
To the original poster, the Praxis is hard as hell, and sometimes I do think it's a scam to get money from people, but I guess it will ALL be worth it in the end. Tonya , Jun 3, Joined: Jun 21, Messages: Likes Received: Jun 3, I agree. After obtaining a Bachelor's or Master's degree, that should be proof enough that they have surpassed the basics. We're tested as we enter, we're tested in every class, we're tested when we exit.
Sometimes in our educational pursuit we get so far past the basics that we lose sight of them, and the need to review is in order. And there's no reciprocity between states as it pertains to the basic skills test. I went all the way up to advanced algebra in college, but when I took the "basic skills" test, I flunked it the first time because it had been YEARS since I operated in basic math functions aside from adding, subtraction, multiplying, and dividing.
We don't use many other math functions in every day life. If we have already made it through graduate school, they don't need to test us in basic skills. It is a scam, and I resent it.
