There are too many people playing King of Glory. By Jon Jordan , Contributing Editor. At its best, the 99c game is a perfectly-formed slice of bite-sized fun in which everyone can partake. There aren't many examples, but one such is Lima Sky's Doodle Jump ; a game so simple and yet so enjoyable that playing it always makes you happy and you always want another go. Add in its social networking features, regular updates, and mash-ups with other games , and it's no surprise Doodle Jump has been in the App Store charts for months.
We caught up with developer brothers Igor and Marko Pusenjak photo credit: Jasna Pusenjak to find out more. At its core, the company is my brother Marko and me. Marko, who's a veteran mobile applications developer, does all the programming, while the graphics are my responsibility.
On the business side, we both work on product management, with Marko taking the lead. My focus is marketing and business development. What was the inspiration for Doodle Jump?
Your goal, as a bunny character, was to catch and eat carrots that fall from the sky. Soon after its release, we started working on a sequel that was going to be called Hop, Bunny, Hop!
The game engine was done fairly quickly, but we had trouble getting the graphics to look right. Frustrated, we decided to take a little break from it.
When we came back to pick up where we had left off the Hop, Bunny, Hop! We started going in that direction and liked what we were coming up with, and since the art style had changed, we decided to create a whole new storyline for the game. How did you manage to keep it so clean and simple? Igor Pusenjak: I'm a big fan of clean and simple and Mies van der Rohe's 'less is more' approach, probably because I have a hard time achieving it in life.
While I was at Parsons School of Design working towards my MFA, one of my professors mentioned Antoine de Saint-Exupery's quote "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away," in the context of design, and this has been the rule I have been trying to apply to every project I work on.
How much discussion did you have about the shooting mechanic? Since then, it's been ported to Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry and more — including the Kinect-controlled Xbox version that was released today. When it comes to games like Doodle Jump , he said that it's important to design for the platform, which explains the game's success on its many mobile platforms. When it came time to develop the Kinect version, Lima Sky partnered with Smoking Gun Interactive, the developer who worked with NASA last year to create the agency's first console game, Mars Rover Landing , a Kinect game that simulated the Curiosity rover's entry intro Martian atmosphere.
With Lima Sky's oversight and Smoking Gun's Kinect expertise, the companies set out to create not a simple port, but a new version of Doodle Jump to take advantage of a new platform. That began with a fundament insight: whereas the mobile version of the game is a solitary affair, the Xbox version is more social. It requires a little bit more of a time investment.
That insight into how Doodle Jump would be played on a console represents Pusenjak's theory at work. Following from that, the Kinect version includes new levels, new bosses and a new ways to gesture-based ways control the game, as we experienced in our recent hands-on with the game.

At the time of writing, just two days after its re-launch, Doodle Jump for Android is not ranked in the top free games for Google Play. It has, however, accumulated between 10, and 50, installs, according to the product's store page. Those who already forked out for the GameHouse version of Doodle Jump will not be served ads, however. Platform platformer It's too early to say whether a new port can rekindle the affections of Android gamers for Doodle Jump , but it's clear that iOS has been the more lucrative platform for the game to date.
It may not be millions, but it's important to bear in mind that these are the revenue figures of a four-year-old game. Doodle Jump is also available as a Java game, and generated considerable revenue from feature phone owners. As with any Java game, though, hard numbers are hard to come by.
So it's fair to say that Doodle Jump has been one of the most notable app store successes to date, albeit one from a different stage in the development of mobile gaming.
And despite its age, the game is still generating revenue for Lima Sky. Whether the newly re-launched Android version, and the increasing proliferation of Doodle-based merchandise will see revenues soar once again remains to be seen though. Comments 1 comment.
